One Step Ahead

A while back I wrote a short post about Miles and his progress with walking. Since then, our insurance denied our request for orthotics and Heidi, his PT, wrote a letter to fight it. While we were waiting on a response she had us use a similar pair that he would wear only to bed, they weren't meant for walking but they would give him the right stretch that he needed. He hated them and would cry so hard when we put them on. It was heartbreaking so we didn't put them on him often.

On Wednesday we got a call from Cascade Prosthetics and Orthotics asking if we could come in tomorrow to get Miles fitted for his orthotics. Insurance finally approved!!! Miles and I went and got him fitted while Kainen was in school. It was quick and painless. He sat so patiently while she put them on and off until she got the toe trimmed down right. I brought a few different pairs of shoes to try on with them. He has to were a size 8 when his normal shoe size is a 6 but they work perfect. He walked out with them on and wore them for about an hour with no complaints.

Our schedule, for now, is on for an hour. Take them off, look for any read marks on his skin. If none put them back on for another hour and then check again and so on. If there are red marks then we need to wait 15-20 minutes to see if they go away. If they don't then we need to call the clinic to make adjustments. We will do that until there aren't any red marks and until he has adapted to them and can leave them on for the majority of the day.

I think this will be very significant in correcting his walking. Getting him off his toes and such. I'm excited for it now. We'll see how it goes.
