The Reveal

I've been fighting with myself for a while now trying to decide whether or not to share photo's of Kainen's foot. I keep hesitating because I'm worried about what people will think not because I'm embarrassed by it but I know that some people will find it unsettling. I don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. I've seen his foot at it's worst, I've seen it as it was healing and I've seen it after so to me it looks really good compared to the visual I still have burned into my brain from the day of the accident. The fact of the matter is that this IS Kainen's foot and it will be for the rest of his life. He's going to have to learn to ignore, confront and/or answer the comments, questions and stares from curious adults and kids. I'm scared for him and what the future holds but he's already proved to me that he can handle it so I just need to be strong and confident not for myself but for him.
In the middle, lower half of his graft (below) you can see a grey line which is the staple
that was accidentally left in his foot. It's slowly making it's appearance :/
He started physical therapy which has been going well but it's the beginning stages so we will see what comes of it. He got his new AFO brace that's custom fitted to his foot and he can wear a shoe with it but I forgot to bring one to the appointment so he's not wearing one in the picture. The brace will take some getting used to, his ankle was sore after being up on it for a few hours the first time which is because of his rolled ankle. The second time his heal was sore so I'll need to talk with the orthotics guy about that one, there might need to be some adjusting. He's able to stand and put weight on his foot. He hobbled across the living room floor without his walker which was encouraging.

You are a very brave Mommy! I can't imagine going through one of the many challenges/heartbreaks your family has faced, let alone all of them. His foot is not what I imagine it would be but not in a bad way. Thank goodness girls dont care about boys feet ;). For sure that boy will have a story to tell, but in the end it makes him who he is. A very strong and courageous boy. God bless your little (or big) family!
